William Roper - The Scalene Triangle

The Scalene Triangle - William Roper
Releasing: August 21st, 2026 on Minaret

The Scalene Triangle is a collaborative free-jazz album by tubaist and multimedia artist William Roper with saxophonists and fellow Arkestra members Devin Daniels and Randal Fisher. Bringing together an intergenerational trio of musicians born and raised in South Central Los Angeles—Roper (71), Fisher (36), and Daniels (29)—the project took shape across four meetings in which the three shared stories and memories of growing up while creating drawings in response to their conversations. Roper later composited the drawings into four graphic scores, which became the foundation for the music on the album.

Why scalene? In Roper’s words: “Scalene Triangle is unequalness. Each angle is different, which means each side is a different length. And that’s what we are: we are not equal in many ways, but because of our unequalness, we can stand together as a unit.”

4 songs, 82 minutes, 3 distinct voices coming together as one … unequally. Pre-order the album now on bandcamp and get an exclusive single “Vortex” 📐

The physical edition of The Scalene Triangle (limited to an edition of 33) is a double CD accompanied by a zine featuring the four graphic scores, liner notes, and photography, as well as a 4×6 art print — all housed in a custom triangular box.

Join us this Friday (8/21) at The World Stage in Leimert Park for the album release concert, where The Scalene Triangle Trio will perform this music publicly for the first time, with special guest Quran Shaheed.
